Workshop Focused on Campus Safety and Self-Defense Skills for All Ages
WEST SUBURBAN CHICAGO–Is your child heading back to college or high school this fall? Are they equipped with the tools and knowledge to protect and defend themselves in a potentially dangerous situation – or know how to avoid one altogether? And what about Mom and Dad? Would you have the skills and ability to protect and defend yourself if you needed to?
Teens ages 14 and up and adults of all ages are encouraged to register for a hands-on safety and self-defense workshop. This event, titled “Real-World Safety/Self-Defense,” will be held on Sunday, July 28 from 10:30 am-12:30 pm. It is being hosted by RJM Strategy Group – a local leader in law enforcement, safety and security for business owners and residents – and DuPage Krav Maga. The event will be held at DuPage Krav Maga located at 22W580 Poss St. in Glen Ellyn. Event check in will begin at 10:00 am.
With the continued escalation of personal assaults, violence, and other crimes at both college and high school campuses, and beyond, it is more important than ever for teens and adults of all ages to understand situational awareness, learn personal safety concepts and try out some basic self-defense skills.
Real World Safety/Self-Defense is intended to empower participants with self-defense knowledge and skills to protect themselves in domestic or street violence situations. It is especially designed for those with little to no self-defense knowledge or experience.
The workshop will include instruction on situational awareness, personal safety and avoiding confrontations and assaults, with a particular emphasis on safety for college and high school campuses. The remainder of the workshop will instruct participants on basic self-defense skills. Both male and female instructors will be on hand to assist participants. Attendees should come dressed for a light cardio workout.
Instruction will be led by retired police officers, Ray McGury and Chuck May, who bring a combined 60+ years of law enforcement experience. Additionally, May, a retired police officer, is a second-degree black belt with experience in self-defense and Krav Maga instruction.
“We will begin with a basic overview of situational awareness,” McGury explained. “We drive home the importance of not being frequently distracted by cell phones and other devices, because that’s when people are most vulnerable to crime. This is particularly important for college students, and even high school students, to be aware of distractions and protect themselves.”
The cost to attend is $40/person; teens ages 14-17 years old may participate with a parent or guardian-signed waiver. Attendees ages 18 and older will need to sign a waiver the day of the event prior to participating.
