POLICE NEWS | West Aurora High School Student Detained for Having Firearm in Backpack

STUDENT FOUND IN POSSESSION OF FIREARM ON WAHS CAMPUS

AURORA–Shortly before 12 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, the Aurora Police Department responded to a report of a student with a firearm on the campus of West Aurora High School.

After being identified, the student was detained by APD officers while their backpack was searched. A firearm was retrieved, and the student was taken into custody. Based on the preliminary investigation, Detectives determined that this was an isolated incident, and that the student did not have any specific plans for violence against WAHS.

Detectives presented the facts and evidence of the investigation to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office who authorized the following felony charges against the student, who is a juvenile:

• 5 counts of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon • 1 count of FOID Card Violation • 2 counts of Aggravated Battery to a peace officer

Student and staff safety on every school campus within the community is a top priority for the Aurora Police Department. Maintaining close partnerships with students, staff, and school administration is crucial in order to resolve incidents such as the one encountered at WAHS today.

APD encourages every student, staff member, and parent to feel comfortable communicating when they see something that concerns them, and follow the advice, “If you see something, say something.” Working together, we can make school campuses safe environments for everyone who uses them.
