Down to Earth: Kami Swanson's Inspiring Journey of Community Service and Creativity
NAPERVILLE–23 year-old Kami Swanson may have been born with Down syndrome, but it doesn't stop her from volunteering and working in the community.
Since she was ten years old, Kami has helped kids with special needs, senior citizens, and music goers at Venue 1012. She has also volunteered at Feed My Starving Children, Kendall County Food Pantry, and A Cup of Happiness.
“I like to help people so they can smile,” Kami says. “I also volunteer in a restaurant to learn how to work and practice being a waitress for my family and friends.”
Although she might consider herself shy, she is actively marketing her hobby-born business branded, Down to Earth. Kami makes beaded plant and garden stakes, lovingly referred to as Fairy Wands. She takes custom orders for colors, holiday themes, personal tokens, and other favorites, ensuring total satisfaction.
The business is enhancing her people skills and increasing her community involvement through charitable donations and free smiles!
“Always believe that you can learn how to do things and help people even if you need extra help too,” Kami says. “You can help people who need it and make someone smile...even if you have a disability! It helps both of us.”
