Be Confident, Be Healthy!

The 11th Century Tibetan Buddhist Master, Atisha, once wrote, "The greatest action is not conforming with the world's ways." I have to remind myself of this all the time while filtering the massive amounts of commercialism each and every day. "Get vaccinated! - Buy Coca Cola! - Eat Lean Cuisine! - Got Milk? - Kid Tested, Mother Approved - 20 McBurgers for $1!"
Where does it end? It doesn't, and furthermore, it won't. It is the nature of things. The good news is that it's okay: it's okay to be yourself, it's okay to go against the grain, it's okay to say "no", it's okay to do what's right for your body.
This is what struck me the most when I was interviewing Dr. Kiley Hirons.
Dr. Hirons is a general dentist at Naperville Dental Specialists in downtown Naperville. She is funny and smart and athletic and quite confident when it comes to making decisions about her health.
"I remember making cookies and bringing them to a party once. I used all these fresh ingredients. They were competing with premade cookies. I think our taste-buds have grown accustomed to the pre-manufactured and processed flavors! I was very surprised," recalled Dr. Hirons. "I don't eat a lot of processed food at all - I love to cook and often cook ahead on Sunday. My rule of thumb is that I just don't keep unhealthy stuff in the house. I workout five times per week alternating between yoga, spinning, running and weight training … and I love food!"

Kiley's Tips:

• Be Realistic when you set your goals.
• Get plenty of sleep.
• Know if you're a night person or morning person! After working 12 hours, the last thing I want to do is workout!
• The fresher the foods, the better!
• Don't deny yourself! Just eat smaller quantities.
• Marathons and Sprints and ½ Marathons keep me motivated - find Your Motivation!
• Be safe. I recently suffered an injury and now need to slow down and take the time to heal. It's hard - because, for me, I spent a lot of time training for a marathon and never had any past injuries.
