ZONE 4 - Fox River Valley
ST. CHARLES, ILLINOIS (combined w/Fox River Valley)
Nestled in the Fox Valley and an hour west of Chicago, St. Charles bursts with naturally charming adventures. Canoes and kayaks skim about as paddlewheel boats cruise the Fox River and visitors stroll across our bridges. Theaters and performance centers, sprawling public parks, tempting boutiques and antique shops, and river and fireside restaurants are lasting testaments to city's visionaries and benefactors, the Baker and Norris families. The First Street Development Project brings 100,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space to our charming downtown. Beautiful landscaping, pedestrian-friendly walkways, and plenty of FREE parking enhances St. Charles' shorelines, 90% of which are preserved for picnicking, jogging and bicycling.
GENEVA, ILLINOIS (combined w/Fox River Valley)
Geneva is well known in the region as quaint, charming historic town. Part of what creates Geneva’s character is its historic architecture. Very few large, ornate homes exist in Geneva. In contrast, most of the architecture is conservative and plain, yet always well maintained. Trees and yards are an integral part of Geneva’s sense of place. Geneva still retains a large number of its mid-to-late 19th century homes. Many are in specific architectural styles such as Italianate, Greek Revival, and Queen Anne. Many of the older houses are of a common vernacular and built in some part with locally quarried stone found along the river. These separate styles blend together to create an atmosphere of refined and understated elegance, perhaps reflecting the taste of the New England roots of Geneva’s earliest settlers.
BATAVIA, ILLINOIS (combined w/Fox River Valley) As the Mayor of Batavia notes, it has been suggested that with the Fox River as the centerpiece, Batavia in some ways looks like a town that time has left alone. Still other people have observed that life in our town fits the description of small town life written about by the likes of Mark Twain or Sinclair Lewis. A recent promotional brochure for a Batavia subdivision perhaps said it best, ‘live in a town like towns used to be.’ Little wonder then, that in 1958 Batavia was the subject of one of those legendary covers on the ‘Saturday Evening Post’ or that today most of the city’s streets are named after U.S. Presidents, trees, American Indians, or prominent Batavia people or places. He added, Batavia has become a place where many people have found that they want to live. Population figures truly tell the story as Batavia grew from a population of 7,496 in 1960 to a census count of 23,866 in 2000.
