In his fourteen years of kitchen and bath design, Marty Scherr has won several awards including the small kitchen category of the Design Visions 2009 NKBA contest for a Glen Ellyn townhome re-model. Currently, Marty is a senior designer with Liam Brex Custom Design and Cabinetry in Naperville. After holding careers in teaching, retail management and real estate sales & management, Marty was eventually led to building homes in Glen Ellyn and discovered his interest in interior design. TENURE: I have been with Liam Brex since its inception 2 ½ years ago.

SERVICES OFFERED: We sell cabinetry from five different manufacturers, with our primary emphasis being kitchens. We can design every aspect of the home project from cabinetry to lighting. We will help shop for the countertop material, backsplash, lights and even wall color!

EDUCATION & PAST WORK EXPERIENCE: Masters Degree in Education; past design work experience with American Oak, Cabinets at Danada and Drury Design.

MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT YOU JOB: Working with interesting people or on an interesting project… if you get both, that's the best!

MOST CHALLENGING PART ABOUT YOUR JOB: Giving the client everything they expect plus more, while sticking to the estimate. There are so many areas where mistakes can be made and you want it all to be the best for the customer while keeping the price reasonable.

TIPS FOR RENOVATING ON A BUDGET: 1.) Don't skimp on design. 2.) Don't do half of the project expecting to change it later. 3.) Get the best custom cabinets that you can afford. 4.) Search for less expensive appliance alternatives. 5.) Look into more contemporary or transitional designs.

HOBBIES: Sports, especially golf. I also coach girls' basketball part time. I am currently the sophomore girls coach at York High School in Elmhurst and have coached at Glenbard West, St. Francis University (Joliet) and for AAU girls' teams.

ADDITIONAL INFO: My wife, Sharon Scherr, owns Dance, Dance, Dance Ltd. in Glen Ellyn (with partner Irene Kruse). I have one daughter, Robyn Scherr-Wells, who lives in Wheaton with her husband Ryan and is the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Roosevelt University in Chicago.
